Belen Cruz ICGS Software Engineering WhatsApp

Belén really didn’t know what she wanted to do with her life and career when she graduated from high school. She did however know what she didn’t want to do; for example, she didn’t want to copy her friends in college, so she chose a computer science major which women in Spain were not encouraged to pursue. When she graduated from college she still didn’t know what she wanted to do, so she decided to continue studying CS – through a masters degree and into her PhD. In her ?nal year she realized that she didn’t want to remain in Spain, so she applied for a foundation grant that would place her in a US tech startup. She landed in a company that designed software for online retailers. While working at a second online commerce company, Belén ?nally realized for the ?rst time what she really wanted to do: to work for one of the big Silicon Valley companies that were creating the world’s most used mobile apps. She had decided to specialize in mobile app development and wanted to be at Apple, Google or Facebook. Today she’s in her dream role at WhatsApp (owned by Meta, formerly Facebook) as part of the team designing the features of WhatsApp for iPhone users.
